Burning Through Common Sense

Here's the problem I have with the morons at the Dove World Outreach Center in Florida who want to go through with the burning of a Koran, the holy Islamic scripture.

Unless they incite a riot, the First Amendment allows these fools to go through with the desecration of a symbol held dear by a billion people. And we could easily say the same about the burning of an American flag, but I digress.

The problem is that this act is deliberately provocative. Invariably, some equally nutty Islamic group will issue a fatwa of the sort that was put out against Salman Rushdie by the Ayatollah Khomeini. And what will we have going on in Jacksonville? A violent religious war?

Then who will have to pick up the tab to protect this stinking "church?" You and me, baby!

Absolutely nothing good will come of this act. And there is the potential for a whole lot of bad ... just wait.

  1. I was watching CNN this morning and the anchorwoman had the audacity to ask: Why are people paying so much attention to this? This being the story she was spending a lot of time telling. This was the lead story on NBC Nightly News last evening. This pastor has fewer than 50 people in his parish. Yet his ridiculous idea gets more play than...

Well, you know what I'm saying. And talk about a recruitment bonanza for al qaeda.

  2. While the proposed act itself is a vile one and merits little coverage, it does raise some interesting questions about the 1st Amendment, as well as questions about the resulting state of interfaith relations.
If there is a hell, then surely this pastor will burn in it. Come to think of it, waterboarding wouldn't be a bad idea either.

  3. He may have a right to say this stuff, but is it right to say this stuff? Rights can be complicated for sure. And I should have put quotes around " recruiting bonanza. " Obama said that this morning.

  4. Sadly as I think we mostly agree he has a right to do this. While I agree that he is an insignificant wacko who is getting more press than he deserves, I would ask why the media (notably the NYT) is so quick to condemn this and the Danish cartoons but just as quick to embrace anti-Christian "art" such Andres Serrano's "Piss Christ"...

  5. Good point about the double standard.
The pastor's church is bankrupt. He got his publicity -- and perhaps an infusion of cash. Methinks now that this was a ham-handed publicity stunt

  6. "Google" him and see what happened when he tried to run a church in Germany.
